Disobedient Tears

Today Luke had a discussion with our boys about being tough. Because Peter was crying over nothing, Luke told them that only some things are worth crying about. Examples would be when you lose a loved one or when you realize you hurt someone else’s feelings. Of course there are other instances, too, but the point was that not being able to play with your favorite toy is not a good reason to cry.

A couple of hours after this conversation, I overheard Peter having this conversation with himself while sitting on his bed:

“I don’t cry because I can’t have candy. I’m trying not to cry but the water keeps coming out.” Then he scolds himself saying, “Stop, me! I don’t like this” and wipes tears from his eyes.

It was so cute! I just wanted to take him in my arms and love on him! Time is going WAY too fast for me!! It won’t be too long before he is taller than me (of course that isn’t really saying much)!! 😀

Hunting in the Forest

Well….not technically a forest. It was actually just a small group of pine trees on one side of a park. This is where we had a little family Easter egg hunt today.

The kids had a blast hunting eggs and then got to play on the playground. Bethany actually enjoyed a playground for the first time. She went down the slide and revealed a few new phrases. First, she said “my turn” as she walked up to the slide. Once she got to the bottom of the slide, she said with excitement, “I did it!” It is so cute listening to 2 year olds learn to talk! (Check back in a few days for more 2 year old phrases) 🙂

On the way back to the van, Luke noticed Bethany turning sideways as she walked and was looking at something behind her. When we discovered why she was doing this, Luke and I could not help but share a good laugh together. She had discovered her shadow for the first time. She was walking around wondering what that thing was that was following her everywhere she want. It was hilarious!

Happy 8th, Anna!

Anna turned 8 last month! She made all the choices regarding her birthday, and here is what we did.

Her favorite birthday gift was the one God gave her – snow. It snowed a good 4 inches that day. So, while I made supper, Luke took the three oldest kids sledding at a nearby park.

For supper we had homemade pepperoni pizza. She specifically chose homemade because she likes mommy’s sauce (had to include that little tidbit!). Then we loaded up and headed to the mall.

Anna, being very sweet and generous, decided to spend some of her money on her mom and dad, and bought us a beautiful green, blue, and gold star. We felt very special to have her spend her own birthday money on us. After being convinced that she should spend some of the money on herself, she bought an Ariel toy for herself at Claire’s.

After the mall, we made a quick trip to Wal-Mart and let her pick out one candy item for herself and one drink of her choice to share with the family. She chose a sucker that looks like a baby bottle that also included other candy inside the bottle and root beer to drink.

When we got home, she got to stay up later than the other kids and enjoy a root beer float! I think she had a blast!!

Take a peek at a few pictures. She is at that age where I have to sneak up on her if I want a shot that isn’t silly! She doesn’t have a bit of personality, does she? 🙂

I’m just now posting this because I’ve had difficulty getting pictures on my blog at the correct size. I finally settled with just putting up thumbnails.

Visiting China

We had been looking forward to the China Care dinner for a week when our van broke down. Since we were looking forward to it and because of the benefit to others if we went, we decided to walk the 2 miles to the dinner. It was a fun adventure! Believe it or not, it was not a bit stressful walking that far in downtown Providence with 5 children! We had 2 of them in a double stroller, 1 in a backpack, and 2 walking (switching out who walked and who rode to an extent). I think we all thoroughly enjoyed the time together as we walked!

About a fourth of the way there, I realized that Peter was a bit confused about where we were walking to. He pointed to a brick wall and excitedly said, “Hey! Is that the Great Wall of China?!” Apparently he thought we were walking to China and either thought we had walked a long way or that China was very close!! (The second assumption would make sense since we are meeting so many people from China and learning their language.) 🙂

By the way, our van is running and sitting in our driveway right now. And the most amazing part is that we drove this 24 hour van for a year and a half before we had a bit of trouble out of it! God is SO good to us!!! He even provided a mechanic through our pastor to help us get a good deal on getting it fixed! Thank you, Lord! 🙂

Why don’t you take a minute to thank God for at least one thing he has given you? You may find it hard to stop once you’ve started. Don’t worry. God is in no hurry to have you stop praising Him! You may even find a blessing or two in disguise!

Family Night

Every Friday night, our family takes time to be with each other. We let the kids stay up late and sleep in on Saturday morning. Some of the things we have done on different nights are watching a movie, playing a board game, calling family on the web-cam and Skype, making videos together, making and practicing international flag flash cards, going to the mall, learning Chinese, and blogging together.

We all look forward to family night every week and always have a blast! You should try it with your family! Just choose a night and an activity and start making long-lasting memories together!!

Here are a few posts about past family nights:

Almost an Artist

Drawing is something I never considered myself able to do. It was probably due to the fact that I tend to be a perfectionist, and my older sister was a great artist. What I drew could not compare with what she could, so I didn’t even try.

Several months ago, Luke suggested we, as a family, draw flags of every country and make a game out of memorizing them (he did this as a child). I agreed as long as I didn’t have to draw them. It soon became quite evident that, although Luke did a great job, he couldn’t keep up with 3 “colorers.” So I volunteered to make some of the more simple cards, like Japan, which only has a circle in the center. 🙂

We finally came to a section that contained no “easy” flags, so I took one a little more difficult. It surprised me when Luke could actually look at the picture and tell what I had drawn when I attempted to draw a dragon!

Since then, I have become a little bolder, and in the process, have realized that I’m not a wonderful artist, but what I draw can at least be recognized.

Luke and I have discovered that he does things with curves, like birds, better than me, and I do straight lines, like stars, better than he does. So sometimes, we each will draw what we can do the best and then pass the card off to the other. And as we had already discovered years ago, we make a better team than we ever could individually. 🙂

Creativity

As I type, AM and P are splashing around in water outside. But not in a pool! Uncle N put plastic in the back of his truck and filled it up with water. So they are swimming in a truck pool!! Isn’t uncle N creative? I must admit that never in my life have I ever imagined my children swimming in the back of a truck!!! But there they are splashing around and having a blast!!!

Stay tuned to hear of their bungee jumping from the chimney!! Just kidding!! But they might really be able to swing like Tarzan. The vines are already provided (hanging out our chimney)! 🙂

A Time to Scream

We went roller blading this evening and thoroughly enjoyed it! The weather was perfect!! As we were skating back on the track at dusk, I decided to skate beside AM and talk to her instead of having her skate halfway between L and me. As we were skating along, I noticed a stick on the path and decided to try kicking it with my skate. This was very exciting for me because I figured I would fall flat on my backside, but I didn’t. I kept skating, quite proud of myself (even though I totally missed the stick).

As I turned back from seeing if I had hit the stick, AM screamed. I was really wondering why my kicking a stick was such a big deal!! Then I looked down and was suddenly glad that I had skated with AM!! I was looking into the face of a snake (do snakes have faces?). It has its head raised and its teeth bared, ready for attack if necessary. I guess it was not very happy about me kicking a stick that was ONLY ABOUT A FOOT AWAY from it!! I had not seen it because I was focused on the stick, so I had already skated past the snake (very close to it, I might add – I’m glad I didn’t fall on it!). I was also quite impressed at how fast AM stopped without falling down (she was close enough that if she had fallen, she might have been bitten).

The snake was now between AM and me, so I sent AM back toward L. N, who was skating with us today, took a stick and kind of guided it off the path. He did not know what kind it was (the snake, not the stick!!). Afterwards, AM was very careful and kept her eyes open (she was even watchful in the yard after we got home).

We have been talking to AM about screaming about small stuff! Needless to say, I did not lecture her on screaming this particular day. I actually told her that she had good reason for it. It might have been better if she actually yelled “snake!!” so we would know what was wrong, but this was her first time to see a snake other than in a cage at the zoo. I’m not sure I would have done more than scream and I’ve seen snakes before!! (of course we’re both girls, and girls tend to scream a lot 🙂

It is interesting to note that AM was concerned that the snake would slither over to her and bite her. I said, “Oh, don’t worry; snakes can’t move that fast.” When the snake got off the paved path and into the grass, I saw how wrong I was! I couldn’t believe how fast it went!! It was practically hopping! I guess AM and I both got our snake lesson for the day! Hopefully we won’t have another for quite a while!

Exercise

We have finally discovered a form of physical activity that the whole family can participate in!! I have wanted this for a long time, and it has finally happened!! Rollerblading!!! Here’s how it works. Luke pushes the double stroller with B and Ph in it and P holding on to the side. Yes, he is able to skate doing this!! (Amazing, huh?) AM follows a good distance behind L because she can’t go quite as fast, and I skate along behind AM zig-zagging and skating in circles (anything to make up for going a little slower).

P has impressed us. At the beginning, one of us would skate ahead so the other could stay with the stroller at a much slower pace because P’s skates kept getting tangled up together or with the stroller. He really had no control at all. By the end of the first day, he was able to hold on to the stroller and keep his legs straight while L pushed the stroller at almost full speed. He even showed off some by skating on one foot!!

The best news of all is that we all love it! We don’t have to drag the kids out when they’d rather be doing something else because, so far, they are itching to go. Roller blading like this is great because I get to spend time with the family, but I also get that much needed time to myself at the same time. That sounds impossible, but it is true because I am mostly skating by myself behind AM (time alone). She isn’t talking much because she is concentrating on her new skill. I can skate up and talk to her anytime I want. Plus L would let AM and me catch up occasionally, so I could converse with him too (time with the family)!

We skate on a walking track with trees and rock on each side. At this time of year there are also small waterfalls and trickles of water that add to the whole experience. While rollerblading along with my family and looking at the things around me, I have a great opportunity to praise God for his beauty. So here is a fun exercise that includes family time, exercise, alone time, and praising God. What more could you ask for in an exercise?!!

What a Guy!!

I have been struggling with lack of sleep for about 5 months due to discomfort during pregnancy and night feedings later on. My husband gave me a great gift on Saturday! He let me sleep in!

I was not even aware that he got up or that the kids were out of bed. I thought I had slept until 8 am, but the clock in the bedroom was wrong due to the power being out the night before (I just pushed a button to make it stop blinking the wrong time – not a smart thing to do!!). Anyway, when I looked at the living room clock, it was 9:30! I can’t remember the last time I slept that late!! The kids usually wake me up between 6:30 and 7:30.

L has let me sleep in before, but I usually hear the kids up playing and feel obligated to get up to help out. This time he put forth an extra effort (just for me) to make sure I did not even know the kids were up.

When I walked into the living room L was working on the computer, and the 2 kids who were up (AM and P) were sitting in the chairs actually whispering in order to keep from waking me or Ph. I didn’t even know they knew how to whisper!! No, but seriously, I was so impressed (and grateful)! I still feel rested from it! Thank you, Luke!!
