Phillip, You’re Pretty Cool!

Almost every morning, Phillip wakes me up with something I don’t mind being woken up to hear. He says, “Mommy, you are pretty.” Then he is very likely to walk over to the other side of the bed and say, “Daddy, you are cool.” Don’t you think he will make a great husband some day? (Of course that’s a long, looooooong time from now!) 🙂 Until then I will enjoy the praise he seeks to give others and try to praise him as much as I possibly can…and hope that his future wife does the same! 🙂

Busy Bethany

Bethany has become quite busy lately! She is learning to run and move faster, and I seem to be losing that ability as my tummy gets bigger and bigger! 🙂 Lately, if the statement “Where’s Bethany” comes from anyone’s mouth, you know there is a mess somewhere to be cleaned up! Here is what she accomplished today:

  • emptied an entire box of kleenex and then tried to put them back
  • partially unpacked a box of clothes from storage
  • pulled all the diapers out of her package of diapers
  • emptied a drawer of dry goods in the pantry
  • pulled half a tub of “pop up” wet wipes from the container
  • stopped the CD player and removed the CD

On the positive side, she also:

  • still enjoys “peek a boo”
  • says “I want some”
  • asks for hugs
  • points at and names facial features
  • obeys simple commands
  • knows the names of her siblings
  • calls car keys “bye bye”
  • dances to any music she hears
  • calls her favorite blanket “night night”

Despite her ability to be two messes along by the time I clean up one, I can’t imagine life without her. She is definitely the most precious 4th child I’ve ever had! 🙂

Phillip’s Turn

On April 23, Anna learned to ride a bike at the age of 7. Peter learned 3 months later on July 24 at the age of 5. This past Sunday on September 2, our little 4 year old learned to ride a bike! They are getting younger and younger (and this time it’s not just my imagination). 🙂 Next thing you know little Bethany will be up on a bike! You think? Nah!!! Give her another 6 months!

Peter’s Excellent Hearing

Billy (a visiting friend): mvieoaijiaknb kldcj
Luke: What?
Billy: fmcaeioainrkane
Luke: Maybe you should swallow your hamburger and then tell me.
Tabetha: No, Billy, there are no more hamburgers.
Luke: Oh, you could understand him? I couldn’t because his mouth was full.
Peter: I could hear him because my mouth is full, too!

The other day, I heard a loud thump followed by Phillip’s crying. I rushed into the living room where the thump had come from and found Phillip laying on the floor with a guilty Peter looking on. When I asked what happened, I discovered that Phillip had been laying on the back of the couch (a no-no at our house) and Peter had pushed him off. When I asked him why, he said, “I heard foot steps in the hall, and I didn’t want Phillip to get in trouble, so I pushed him off!” I did not see the humor in this until I told Luke and watched him burst into laughter at his son’s logic!

Bethany’s First Chat

Bethany loves the computer. This morning she got access to a computer and started hitting keys to her hearts’ delight. The only problem was that she was typing them in a chat window with Luke, who was sitting in the next room. She actually hit enter and was completely surprised when Luke said, “No, Bethany,” when he couldn’t even see her. I guess Bethany chatted at a younger age than anyone else in the household. Those computer gurus just keep getting younger and younger!

Tied Down? – by Edgar A. Guest

“They tie you down,” a woman said,
Whose cheeks should have been flaming red
With shame to speak of children so.
“When babies come you cannot go
In search of pleasure with your friends,
And all your happy wandering ends.
The things you like you cannot do,
For babies make a slave of you.”

I looked at her and said: “Tis true
That Children make a slave of you,
And tie you down with many a knot,
But have you never thought to what
It is of happiness and pride
That little babies have you tied?
Do you not miss the greater joys
That come with little girls and boys?

“They tie you down to laughter rare,
To hours of smiles and hours of care,
To nights of watching and to fears;
Sometimes they tie you down to tears
And then repay you with a smile,
And make your trouble all worth while.
They tie you fast to chubby feet
And cheeks of pink and kisses sweet.

“They fasten you with cords of love
To God divine, who reigns above.
They tie you, whereso’er you roam,
Unto the little place called home;
And over sea or railroad track
They tug at you to bring you back.
The happiest people in the town
Are those the babies have tied down.

“Oh, go your selfish way and free
But hampered I would rather be,
Yes rather than a kingly crown
I would be, what you term, tied down;
Tied down to dancing eyes and charms,
Held fast by chubby, dimpled arms,
The fettered slave of girl and boy,
And win from them earth’s finest joy.”
