The Dollar General Experience

Yesterday I went to Dollar General to get one item (M-30 for grease stains). I could not find it in the automotive section so I went to the checkout and asked a girl who did not seem to be busy. She went to the back to get it, not sending me because she wasn’t sure where it was. This particular DG had 2 registers. I was standing at a register that was closed. When the girl came back and handed me the M-30, I thanked her and pushed the stroller around by the door to get to the other register. So far, I was impressed with her customer service skills.

As soon as I got to the register, the girl who had helped me said to the person in front of me, “Come around to the other register. That one is about to close.” Then she told me the same thing. So I began to make my way to the other register, this time going around through the store rather than by the door because a customer was coming in the door at that moment. The problem was that the first aisle I could have cut through had a big cart sitting there (full of stuff left there by an employee). The next cut through aisle had the same thing. This was a problem because I was pushing a double stroller with 2 kids tagging along, too. From here, I noticed a woman with a cart loaded down getting in line, along with 2 or 3 people getting in line behind her. So I went back to the other register, thinking surely they can ring up one item, especially since I was in this line before they closed it. I must admit that I was slightly irritated at the whole situation.

When I got to the register, the girl asked if she should ring me up. The woman who had been so helpful before very rudely said, “No, go clock out. Never mind you don’t clock out, do you?” So the girl left the register without a word to me. I put the M-30 on the counter and began to leave the store, determined to find M-30 elsewhere. As I was walking out of the store, I got a little burst of boldness. I approached the woman, with her line of customers, and told her that her aisles from one register to the other were blocked and that I had been sent on a wild goose chase because I left a closed register only to end up at a register that was closing. She offered to ring me up immediately, but I refused because I wanted her to realize that good customer service is important, and the lack of it can cost you business.

And the really neat thing about this is that I went to another store and found a similar product for a cheaper price!

I was not confident that I had made the right move in leaving the store. I was afraid I would not find M-30 anywhere else, and I needed it because P had gotten motor oil all over a new shirt. I wondered if I had hurt myself more than anything until I found a similar product at a better price. I wonder, though, what you think? Was I just was wasting my time by leaving?

What a Guy!!

I have been struggling with lack of sleep for about 5 months due to discomfort during pregnancy and night feedings later on. My husband gave me a great gift on Saturday! He let me sleep in!

I was not even aware that he got up or that the kids were out of bed. I thought I had slept until 8 am, but the clock in the bedroom was wrong due to the power being out the night before (I just pushed a button to make it stop blinking the wrong time – not a smart thing to do!!). Anyway, when I looked at the living room clock, it was 9:30! I can’t remember the last time I slept that late!! The kids usually wake me up between 6:30 and 7:30.

L has let me sleep in before, but I usually hear the kids up playing and feel obligated to get up to help out. This time he put forth an extra effort (just for me) to make sure I did not even know the kids were up.

When I walked into the living room L was working on the computer, and the 2 kids who were up (AM and P) were sitting in the chairs actually whispering in order to keep from waking me or Ph. I didn’t even know they knew how to whisper!! No, but seriously, I was so impressed (and grateful)! I still feel rested from it! Thank you, Luke!!

Lovely Day

What an absolutely gorgeous day!!! The kids actually got to play outside today without me worrying that they will get sick! It is beautiful out there!

Anyway, we will not be traveling this weekend. That is both a disappointment and a relief. I wanted to see my family again, yet I am relieved not to have to worry that I will have a baby away from home. For those of you who actually read my blog last night and prayed for us, thank you!

Baby Time (almost)

Well, I am now less than 5 weeks from my due date. The doctor told me today that it would be safe for me to deliver any time after 36 weeks. I was excited at first because I am ready to have this baby. Not only am I tired of carrying her and not being able to hold my other kids in my lap, but I want to know what she looks like!!

Only one problem. I may be traveling 5 hours away from my doctor this weekend. I really don’t want to have this baby in Oxford! So, a little prayer for me (and Bethany) would be much appreciated! Meanwhile, after this weekend, I will patiently await the arrival of a new daughter!

Phones Mean Noise!!

What is it about talking on the phone that causes children to go haywire? The kids can be perfectly content and playing in their room…until I dial a phone number. Then their little radar detectors go off, and they all flock to the living room!

I don’t have a clue how they can tell from down the hall that Mommy is on the phone, but they come faster then than when I call them to the living room!! Maybe I should pick up the phone and pretend to talk every time I want them to come quickly. Nope, it probably wouldn’t work because their radar detectors wouldn’t go off! Oh well!

Maybe I should always have something in mind that I need done. Then when they come into the living room, I can say, “Hey, I’m so glad you came in here. The floor needs swept.” If I kept that up, it would eventually get to the point where when they came into the room, I could just point at the job to be done without saying a word, and they’d get busy (yeah right!!) 🙂 It is more likely that they’ll walk in the room, see me on the phone, and tiptoe back to their room as fast as their little legs will carry them. Either way I get a peaceful phone conversation! I’ll have to experiment and see if it works.

Really!?

I sent an email to my husband, and he mentioned that it would be a great blog entry. I was kind of surprised, and my response was “really?!” I thought it was too simple to post. I have a lot to learn, huh? Here is what it said:

It is absolutely beautiful outside!!! The clouds from this morning are gone, and the sun is blindingly bright (which is welcome at this time of year). I went out to the mail box without a jacket and was not cold. Of course if I stayed out long, I would need a jacket! If the kids weren’t sick, I’d let them go out today!
